August 5, 2010 Samantha and Alissa Go Fishing

A minute before Alissa (on the right) wacked Samantha with the tail of her fish - no accident, although she said it was.

The wind was starting to shift around from the southwest to the northwest and huff up to the forecast of 30 mph in the afternoon. But at 5:30 in the morning it hadn’t got there yet. I talked over whether we should go or not with Gary and the crew and they were game, so we went. The ride out to the island wasn’t too bad, at least not until we hit the 10.5 nautical mile mark and started to lose protection from the island. The wind and waves quickly convinced me that we should tuck in by the dead birch and turn south. I saw some salmon on the screen and set lines at 110 and 120. Before I could get a third line going the first two had kings on them the game was on. We seemed to have decent action for the next couple of hours including a rigger arm that snapped off. The fish seemed to favor glow spoons which shouldn’t be a surprise to regular Leland salmon fishermen tat this time of year.

In the end it was a great morning both with the fish and two girls who kept us smiling.

Temperature on the first bank was 130 yesterday evening and should move up with this NW blow.
