July 1, 2010 Leland Salmon Report

A guy stopped by the boat today and said the salmon fishing at Frankfort was mostly small fish right now and asked me how it was here. “Same thing,” I said. We caught several small kings and some trout this morning for a total of 10 fish, but only had one big fish take a rip at the dipsy.

In other news the charter guys who attended the DNR hearings on lake trout regulations came away saying the DNR is using a 30-year-old computer model developed in Lake Huron to make its trout decisions today. And some of the assumptions built into the program, like thinking that 15% of released fish die, seem preposterous. I didn’t attend the meeting and can’t say how accurate these accounts of the “computer model” are and hope that they are bad reports as I would expect better of our fish management people if they are true.
