August 1 Traverse City salmon fishing report

Reports that I hear are that  few salmon have rounded the tip of the penninsula and are headed into Grand Traverse Bay. Anglers are catching some, but not lots at this point. By the end of the month and into September the fishing will get pretty good. But for now the best salmon fishing is in Leland as you can see from the  photos and report on this blog. There are a lot of kings hanging out at the island, first bank, and second bank feeding on bait. Every summer the king salmon seem to arrive at Leland and feed until the spawning urge moves them to the rivers where they were planted or were hatched. When the 4-year fish move on we usually have a big surge of three year fish that crowd the islands until through September.

Both charter boats and private boats are doing well. Come join the fun!

These trout screwed up.

The friends of these trout are happy that all the boats are fishing for salmon right now and leaving the lake trout alone.

  1. Good to hear!
Do you suppose most of those fish are from the boardman/bay?

  2. 8-2 -9

Fished Suttons Bay today from 545am – 9 am and went 2/4 landing one small laker and one midsized king. had a big rip on my dipsey – nice fish – came unbuttoned. had one other knockoff – nobody home.

balls down 60-80 one spoon king and one flasher-fly rip (BTI mamba and glow BTI fly) on the dipsey 250 back- fireline

    too rough on main lake!
